SH – Quiz Creation Feature Case Study
Project Overview
SurveyHeart is a mobile-first SaaS platform that allows users to easily create online forms and surveys on Android. The app had already gained strong traction with millions of users for its simple form creation experience.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for remote learning and online assessments surged. Our goal was to extend SurveyHeart’s capabilities beyond forms — by introducing a Quiz Creation feature inside the existing app.
The goal of this project was to introduce a new Quiz Creation feature inside the existing form app with minimal development effort and within a short time — helping users adapt to remote learning.
My Role
At that time, I was a Junior UI/UX Designer, responsible for:
- Designing the Quiz Creation flow using the existing form interface.
- Ensuring the new feature looked and felt consistent with the SurveyHeart design language.
- Collaborating with developers to reuse existing components for faster implementation.
- Creating quick prototypes for stakeholder review and user validation.
I worked closely with a senior designer and the product manager to bring this feature to life during the early pandemic phase.
Background & Problem
Before this project, SurveyHeart only supported form creation — it had no quiz or scoring system.
However, during COVID-19, thousands of users (especially teachers) started using forms as makeshift quizzes, manually checking answers.
Key problems identified:
- No way to set correct answers.
- No automated scoring or results view.
- Forms and quizzes looked identical, confusing respondents.
The challenge was to introduce quiz capabilities without creating a separate app or overhauling the form builder.
Project Goals
Allow users to create quizzes using the same flow as form creation.
Add options for correct answers and scoring.
Keep the design consistent and light for development.
Deliver the feature quickly to meet urgent user needs during lockdown.
Research & Insights
Due to lockdown restrictions, user research was limited but we collected valuable input through:
- In-app feedback from teachers using forms for tests.
- Play Store reviews mentioning quiz-related needs.
- Internal testing sessions with the product and dev team.
Key insights:
Users didn’t want a completely new interface — they preferred the existing familiar design.
The most requested feature was auto-scoring for multiple-choice questions.
Simplicity and speed mattered more than advanced options.
Design Approach
1. Extending the Existing Flow
To ensure minimal disruption, I designed a Quiz Mode toggle in the form creation screen.
Once activated:
- Users could mark correct answers while adding questions.
- Each question had a score indicator.
- The responses were automatically graded after submission.
This approach required very few new screens and reused the existing question components.
2. UI Enhancements
- Added a “Quiz” label at the top to visually distinguish it from a normal form.
- Used color cues and icons to indicate correct answers.
- Designed a result summary view for users to see scores immediately after submission.
Even as a junior designer, I focused on keeping the design lightweight and intuitive, so users could adapt easily.
3. Prototyping & Validation
I created low-fidelity prototypes in Figma to quickly demonstrate the quiz flow.
We conducted internal reviews and small pilot testing with teachers.
Feedback outcomes:
- “It’s easy — feels just like creating a form.”
- Requested a visible total marks indicator (which was added).
- Appreciated the auto-score summary view.
This validation gave confidence to move forward quickly.
Key UI Highlights
- Quiz Mode Toggle → Switch between Form and Quiz instantly.
- Set Correct Answer → Select one or more right answers per question.
- Auto-Score Summary → Instant result shown after submission.
- Reused Form UI → Same familiar design to reduce confusion.
Impact
The Quiz feature launched successfully during the COVID period and became one of the most-used features in SurveyHeart.
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Time to design & develo | < 4 weeks |
| App downloads after launch | Grew from 2M → 5M+ |
| Educator adoption | Increased by 50%+ |
| User feedback | So simple and useful for online classes! |
Tools Used
- Figma – Wireframes & Prototypes
- Adobe XD – Early design exploration
- Google Meet – Remote feedback sessions
- Jira – Collaboration with dev team
What I Learned as a Junior Designer
- How to design effectively under tight deadlines and limited resources.
- The importance of reusing familiar UI patterns for faster adoption.
- Collaboration with developers is key when balancing design goals and technical limits.
- Simple, purposeful design decisions can create massive real-world impact.
Outcome
The Quiz Creation feature transformed SurveyHeart from a simple form app into a powerful all-in-one tool for both data collection and online assessments.
This project marked a turning point in my early design career — teaching me how UX thinking, adaptability, and clarity can deliver value even in challenging conditions.
